I am anemic and Iron regimen not working like it supposed to.?
I was diagnosed in late August 2009 with anemia and I was told to go on iron pills. No big deal. I have been taking one everyday since. Earlier this week I went to the doctor for blood work and I get a call saying my red blood count is still low. They asked me if I was still on the iron pills. I told them I was and have been. I didn't get much info from the nurse as far as what is to be done next other than they want me to come back in. So now I am stuck waiting til next week to find out.
I was wondering what would cause my red blood cells not to be higher even after taking iron for 7 months. This is puzzling. I don't feel tired all the time. Sometimes it still hits me though. I am wondering am I doing something wrong? Can anemia be worse than this? I cant imagine taking 2 pills cause 1 is killer on the stomach. I have to take it at night so my thyroid pill doesn't interact with it. Now I am a little worried.
What kind of test will they need now?
Anyone with info please help. I want some info before my appointment next week.

well I'll assume they started you on iron without testing for iron in your blood. AND now they will probably test for iron in your blood.
Are you on the pill? If you aren't, you probably should be. This will help regulate your periods and you'll have less bleeding.
Everyone has problems with iron pills. If you are having aches and constipation with the iron, make sure you are staying hydrated, and take the iron with food or citrus like oranges. I'm not calling you a liar, but if you're not taking it everyday, then fess up, no biggy.
You may also just want to start a multivitamin for B12 and folate.
Most young women develop iron deficiency from heavy periods. But given that you are also hypothyroid, I'd consider something autoimmune such a celiac disease (allergy to gluten).

The formula is (41*100)/300 The reason is 1% of 300 is 300/100. You want to know how many '1%s' are in 41, so you divide 41 by 300/100.

There are several types of anemia. You will need to find the type of anemia and then get the correct treatment. Check this web site for additional information. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/00... Good luck to you.
