Why airlines fly up north then south?
ex: If flying from Washington DC to Cairo, we have to fly up north over Europe then south to Cairo?
to conley39: I also thought that it was true before, but let's consider the path between 2 cities on the orbit. The shortest path should be all the way thru the orbit isn't it? Or two cities to the south below the orbit, the path should be to the south isn't it? But the actual pahts are not.

Because the earth is roughly a sphere and not flat. The shortest distance between two points following the surface will be a great circle (ie, a circle that cuts the globe into two equal parts). On a flat map that projects roughly to the course you are aware of.
