How do you get your diabetic teen (age 19) to comply with testing and taking insulin?

Update:

Teen has other health issues that caused a lifetime of taking multiple medications and many hospital stays. Diabetes was diagonosed 2 years ago with off and on compliance.

Take them to a dialysis treatment center to see all of the diabetics on dialysis with failed kidneys. Most of them are also missing limbs and digits as well due to amputations. If that doesn't scare them nothing will.

You do not say how long this person has had diabetes, but most have had it for several years so they should already be doing their own thing with it. My nephew who is 7 now, does all his own testing and insulin injecting, checking the numbers with his mom. But he knows exactly the punishment he hands himself if he messes up.

A nineteen year old person is totally responsible for their own health or should be. Let him alone to learn the consequences of his actions. He will come around to doing it right, maybe not until he lands himself in the hospital, but will come around shortly.

You are trying to treat him as a baby when he is thinking of himself as an adult! Please let him be an adult, no matter how hard or much it hurts to cut the apron strings. He must be allowed to make his own mistakes.

Unless this 19 year old is mentally defective, s/he's an adult now and deserves to be treated as such. This means that you have to let him/her make his/her own mistakes, including mistakes that can have grave repercussions. You can offer support, but this person is an adult now. Trying to treat him/her like a child will certainly backfire on you.

Give them the choice of taking their lifestyle and diet seriously to the point where they might not have to take insulin. Check out the movie "simply raw", Essentially, by asserting the facts that they are able to take control and therefore responsibility for their health you can eliminate having to "comply"

Control it purely with a strict diet and lifestyle, monitor it with testing to prove it's working.

leave him alone and soon they'll realize once ther in the hospital they'll see how importan it is to do all that stuff by himself. i remember when i first got diagnosed and it was scary. i almost died. if he wants to die tell him it'll be a long PAINFUL death
