just do the test the way your lab manual says as it is really easy to understand

there is no shortcuts what so ever but some salts have a specific colour that your friends might have used to guess the salt correctly. but most of the salts are white which can only be guessed through tests egs flame tests, test for chlorides nitrate etc.

however the tests are really easy.

also ask your teacher to help you out.

1.there are certain test that needs to be performed before you know what kind of salt it is eg sulphate, chloride, bromide etc

2.then there are other certain set of test that tell you what positive ion it possesses eg whether it is sodium, zinc, copper etc

3.combining the results for 1. and 2. youll probably find your answer.eg:-copper sulphate, ammonium nitrate etc.

    Read the Lab Manual carefully

If you dont have one. Get it. Its really useful.

im hope this would have helped you out to some extent

    All the Best

There are various tests you can do...1) colour...copper sulphate, for example, is a distinctive blue colour. 2) Test for chlorides, nitrates etc...... 3) flame test for the metal...eg Potassium has a distinctive lilac flame.
