Why does my blood sugar go sky high when I fast?
I have been trying to fast for religious reasons.I do not drink anything with sugar in it. When I take my blood sugar and it's over 300. I am not on insulin. I am diet controlled. Should I talk to my Dr. about this?

When you haven't eaten in a long time, your liver responds by producing sugar to provide your body with energy. This then raises your blood sugar.
You may need to break your fast and talk to your doctor to see if you can find ways to safely fast without raising your blood sugars.

As Shannon has so eloquently stated, during periods of starvation ... which your body believes it is going through when you fast, your liver releases some of it's store of glycogen ... the way it stores glucose. This is why your blood sugar level rises.
Forgive me if I'm encroaching, but many religions make medical exemptions during periods of fasting. Of course, if you're doing this for yourself, medical exemption wouldn't apply.
It might be worth you speaking to your doctor about this as s/he may suggest medications to aid you during this/these periods.
Be well, dear lady.

We would sometimes fast in our Church, and my husband who was a minister would tell hr Diabetics to fast from TV or other things and not to put their lives in jeopardy. God wouldn't want you to take chances with your health.
