Could someone explain to me how Dexter got a fourth season?

I watched the first three seasons and felt the quality went down pretty quickly and thought it was gonna get the boot; then tonight I discover they've just finished season four. When shows like reaper and prison break have been axed how has dexter kept going?

    Because enough people were watching it that it was making money. So many people watched the s4 finale it set records. TV has nothing to do with quality (plenty of critics love Dexter, but I agree it went downhill with s3).

    Prison Break wasn't cancelled, btw. It ended on its own.

    Its a great show. Haven't thought or noticed the quality going down (Am watching Season 3 now)
