Is California alimony indefinite?

Question

I was married 36 years. Do I have to pay alimony indefinitely? There seems to be a cut-off of some kind when I hit 65. How does the court decide how much I pay and how long this lasts? Is there some sort of online calculator that I can use? 

I'm asking because I'll hit that 65 in a few months and would like to plan my finances based on my half of my retirement that I get to keep. Even if there is some post-65 obligation, is there a chance I could reduce this?

There is a formula but I don't know exactly what it is.  It is based on your wife's ability to earn money for herself.  It usually last about 3 years or so.

A marriage lasting 36 years is highly likely to qualify for alimony if:

1. One spouse made significantly less money than the other
2. One spouse was a homemaker or SAHM for a long period of time during the marriage
3. If by change you and  your wife both worked and made the same amount of money during your marriage, you could have a chance at not paying.

If you are ordered to pay, it's very likely that you'll be ordered to pay until she either passes away or remarries.

I've never heard of a "cut off" at age 65 despite looking though several CA alimony websites. However, you really should get a consultation with a lawyer because that might make sense if she's able to draw from your social security as well.
