Where in the bible is the transition from the 1000 year or so long day in genesis into a 24 hour day?

I have seen in a lot of answers to genesis questions that god's days were longer than a normal day. I have read the bible a few times and no where is there a passage stating, "back in genesis a day was equal to 1000+ years (or whatever the common conclusion is) and as of now a day is going to mean a 24 hour period."

The idea that the days of the creation narrative actually represent extended periods of time cannot be sustained from the text. The word 'day' in Genesis is the same word used everywhere else to refer to a regular day. There are some places where it is used metaphorically, the "day of the Lord" for example. But a day is a day. Changing it does extreme violence to the literary structure of the narrative. In short, it's sloppy exegesis.

Ah, but the bible doesn't say that isn't the case either...to put it quite simply, as far as the bible is concerned, we don't know how, when or even if the length of a "day" changed between the first few chapters of Genesis and the rest of the bible. More importantly, I would argue that the question is irrelevant. After all, if it was important for us to understand how or when he created everything OR how long in modern terms it took for him to create everything, wouldn't God have devoted a lot more than two chapters out of 1,800+ chapters in the bible to discussing that topic???

It has always boggled my mind that so many people use the bible to answer questions it wasn't designed to answer and then view the answers they find (or, more accurately, make up via their own speculation) as valid enough to either support their own beliefs OR refute the beliefs of others. How can they not see that what they're doing is basically the same as trying to solve a math problem using a psychology textbook.

I can think of three bits of evidence: 1. Genesis 1:23-31 shows that land animals and Adam and Eve were all made on one creative day -- the sixth day. But Genesis 2:7-23 gives the details surrounding the creation of the first man and woman. It speaks of Adam naming all the animals and there not a partner for him as is the case for the other animals. It speaks of Adam falling into a deep sleep and a woman being formed from one of his ribs and brought to him. Adam is quoted as saying: "This is AT LAST . . .". Can anyone reasonably say that Adam's task of naming so many animals and coming to the realization that there was no one for him took place in less than 24 hours. Would a perfect man, created less than 24 hours ago and still overwhelmed by the novelty and joy of being alive in beautiful surroundings feel lonely in less than 24 hours? Would he say after meeting a women less than 24 hours after coming into existence: "at last" as if he had been waiting for so long? So the 6th day cannot reasonably have been a mere 24-hour period as considerable time must have elapsed from Adam's creation until the creation of Eve, based on the detials revealed in Genesis 2. 2. The seventh day of God's rest from his creative work has not yet ended as indicated by Hebrews 4:3-11. 3. Genesis 2:4 uses the same word "day" to refer to the duration of the activities of all six creative days, thus showing that "day" is not used with the literal 24-hour period in mind.

The 1 day = 1,000 years is in reference to how God views time and has nothing to do with the creation account (though people will use that as a means to offset the six, 24-hour day creation problem).

As another already pointed out, the original hebrew word for day had no reference to the rotation of the earth, or 1,000 years. Instead, it would likely be translated into "epoch" by those who were not stuck on the theologian-driven concept that the earth is only 6,000 years old.

And where an epoch is involved, time is meaningless and can easily account for thousands, if not millions of years.

Traditionalism, not pragmatism, drives beliefs in today's Christian churches.

Actually it states in another part of the bible 'a day is like 1000 years to God', and 'yom' can be translated as a very long period of time in Genesis.

It doesn't say that anywhere because it means actual days. Was Jesus resurrected 3000+ after he was crucified? I kinda doubt that, considering the fact that it has barely been 2000 years after he was born...

Now, let's say that a day IS a thousand years. If a year is made up of 365 "days", then wouldn't that mean that there are 36500 years in a year? But wait, it gets better! Each "year" IN that year would also have that many "days", meaning each "year" would last that many "years". An everlasting loop! How fun!

In the "Day of Adam" In the "Day of Jesus" Day is used in genesis 1 as a period of time that coudl be a billion years (in my opinion) so there is a 24 hour day AND day can be used as a period in history....

Day can mean a longer time period than 24 hours. Noah's day lasted more than 1 day.
