Oh, sure, that "remember the sabbath day to keep it holy" one, which is referring to *Saturday* by the way, is just oh-so-relevant today...

Three of the "commandments" are perfectly fine (don't steal, don't murder, don't lie). They're hardly original to the bible, though -- they were common law among civilizations that were around long before mythical moses, and were written down long before him too. And there's no need for a mythical god to make them "commandments" -- anybody with half a brain can figure out those are bad things to do in human society.

It's not really a question of "believing" the ten commandments or not -- they're just pretty much worthless, they're not original, and there's no need to pretend some god gave them out as the useful ones are just common sense.

    Peace.

It's not that we don't "believe in the ten commandments". They are written down, so obviously they exist. What I don't believe is that some mythical sky daddy whispered them in Moses' ear.

The problem is 1-4 are really just self serving statements related to preserving religion. #5 is just an ambiguous statement which could be interpreted in many ways. 6-10 are the real "moral rules" and these same basic rules exist in virtually every civilization - whether they are exposed to the Bible or not.

Nothing is wrong with many of the Ten Commandments. They are there to guide people to do the right thing. It's basically just a set of morals for people to follow so we can all live in peace. Which isn't working because "God gave us free will". But I digress.

I don't get it.. Yes an atheist would say that they don't believe in the ten commandments because atheist don't believe in god or christianity or any other religion as far as that goes. But that doesn't mean atheists don't have morals.

Christianity has been around 2000 years. Humanity has been around longer. You don't need this list to know what is right and wrong.

But as you want a proper answer, then i agree with 5,6,7,8,9. But when the bible says adultery, it also means sex before marriage. Well frankly, sex before marriage with your bf, is different to screwing around behind your partners back with someone else.

I see nothing wrong with coveting, all humans do it. There's just a matter of knowing where the line is. And in regards to lying about someone, well, sometimes lies protect people.

    Bible = loopholed.

Alot of people think the Bible is a book full of ****, not written by anything holy

That doesn't mean there is no moral value to the so called 'ten commandments'

Thy shalt not kill IS a good rule to live by, that in no way means some guy named Moses was called by some higher power God to spread the word among us mere mortals.

Atheists do have morals you know.

I ignore the ten commandments, especially the god sh!t...the first four.

The remaining six are reasonable but not up to scratch in a modern society that needs relevant laws.

    Dogma is not acceptable.

The first two contradict the idea of freedom of religion. The third is against freedom of speech. The fourth is silly and no one follows it anymore (unless you think it is ok to ban doctors from working on the Sabbath). Five through nine are ok and probably shouldn't be changed. (We might want to stop being from stoning their kids for sass though.) And the one about coveting would be impossible to enforce in the Western world. Hell, our entire economy is based on coveting.

Well, for one thing, the Ten Commandments can really be boiled down to two... maybe three:

    1. Thou shalt always be honest and faithful, especially to the provider of thy nookie.

    2. Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless of course they pray to a different invisible man than you.

    3. Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself.

Most of them are fine, but they're also rules that just about every culture and religion embraces. Most of the commandments are not unique to Christianity.
