Is Australia really filled with insects and spiders?

In our place we have one of the most eco sensitive environments in the country ...sort of like an artificial food chain ...

Little insects & spiders eaten by bigger insects & geckos which in turn are eaten by mice & rats which are the main meal of our carpet python that resides in our ceiling cavity...

No blood , gore or mess ...

Insects In Australia

Hi, i live in south australia and we have bugs and stuff, but nothing outragerous. every now and then i find a spider in the house or the garden. we have quite a few mosquitoes and flies in areas during the warm months, but they're mostly annoying, not scary. I have never seen any big, scary insects here, except maybe a cockroach or two. Really, it wont be much different to any other place in the world if you are in a town/city. If you go to the outback or you are doing lots of hiking in the bush you will obviously see more bugs and spiders.

The same goes for snakes. Unless you are out in the bush you will probably not see one. Make lots of noise and they will get scared away anyway. Take usual precautions - don't walk in long grass where you cant see where you're stepping, don't walk around barefoot outside unless you're at the beach.

I absoloutely FREAK OUT at the site of insects and spiders. I am also an Australian and I don't have any problems living here. We get the ocassional bug but unless you go outside digging around, you're not going to see any spiders. A lot of shows make it seem like Australia is filled with snakes, bugs, insects and spiders (not to mention crocodiles) but it's really not like that at all. :) I hope you enjoy your exchange program

Well we do have insects and spiders, but not more than on any other continent. Australia may be infamous for poisonous spiders (there are no poisonous insects in Australia), but even they are rare to come across, i have never seen a spider more poisonous than a redback, and redbacks don't really kill you, they just make you sick (you do need to get to a hospital), but they are shy animals, sitting in the corners, they don't attack you unless you go touching them. Don't worry about it, millions of people are living their everyday life here never thinking about insects and spiders, and deaths from spiders are very rare. Just relax and do the trip ;-)

I DO live out in the bush (South Western Queensland) and we do have problems with snakes and spiders at times. So long as you do not walk around outside with bare feet you should be fine. If you see a snake, walk SLOWLY away. Apart from that the only things to worry about are Drop Bears. Most encounters with Drop Bears are fatal, but they are very rare.

If you are only visiting the city you will have no worries but if you intend to see our beautiful country then just watch where you step and always wear shoes. Having said that, what you will see in the cities is nothing. Try the bush and I guarantee you will love Australia.

Dont worry I have been living here all my life and I have never been bitten by anything dangerous, but when you are in Australia you are always aware of these things...

Okay, so I am SOOOO afraid of spiders & insects, that it's actually affecting my decision to go on a cultural exchange program there.. Please be honest, I'm not saying if there are a lot of bugs there I won't go, I'm just curious.

Do we have spiders and insects here? Yes we do. Is it filled with spiders and insects? No it is not. They are not viscious, they will not hunt you down in the night. They pretty much just hang around going about their business. Don;t let them put you off visiting a fabulous place!

Yes we have lots but no need to be afraid most homes get pest control done, so must homes are free from nasties. There are lots of ants and inland a lot of flies but not many near the coast. You really wont notice them . If you are out doors at dawn or dusk when there is a possibilty of mosquitos then you can buy an insect repelent to put on.

Yes... most of our population lives on the coast because we are so full of insects and spiders that we're nearly pushed over the brink. The people in the centre are just fearless weirdos and us others on the coast are just more afraid of jumping into the water with the sharks and stingrays than we are of the bugs pushing us in that direction... bit of an eternal standoff..
