Under the Classic points system Jimmie would have won the 2006 & 2009 Championships.

& just for the hell of it...

    Year Driver (championship number)

    2004 Jeff Gordon (5)

    2005 Tony Stewart (2)

    2006 Jimmie Johnson (1)

    2007 Jeff Gordon (6)

    2008 Carl Edwards (1)

    2009 Jimmie Johnson (2)

(if the Classic format was used from 2004 to 2009)

We will never know. My guess is he'd still have all 4. He's been the best team of those seasons. Looking at who had the most points under the old format is a waste of time because they weren't using that system during these 4 seasons. Every team knows the system and strategizes accordingly. Its no secret the 48 team uses the 1st 26 races to prepare for the final ten. They definitly wouldn't take that approach under the old system. Its like saying after a football team loses by 2 points that they would've won had they made that field goal in the 1st quarter.

If you assume that everyone would have scored exactly the same ammt of points that they scored with the Chase, then this year would have been his 2nd title.... but under the old system, drivers would have looked at things differently and drove different. Pablo wouldn't have been points racing just trying to make the Chase. With 10 to go, most of the drivers who weren't in the top 4 or so spots would have given up on the title and been "working towards next season", because they would have already been eliminated from title hopes.

  • IMO, it doesnt matter unless you are comparing his chapionships to others, in which case people seem to do ALOT! He gets alot of credit for being so dominant, but in reality his team has just happened to pull it together at the right time of the year (at the right tracks). Since those tracks are ALWAYS the same every year, its easy to see how one could be a repeat champion once they put in the research and development time/$$$ at THOSE certain tracks. He gets compared to Gordon & Earnhardt alot, but thats like comparing Apples to Oranges... Gordon would be the ONLY one compared to Earnhardt had they been scored the same all along.... infact I think Carl Edwards would have 2 as well. Not to say that Jimmie ISN'T one of the BEST ever, but I wouldnt quite place him with Jeff or Dale JUST yet.... BTW, IMO competition was just obviously WAY too weak to compare anyone to Petty's reign.

I don't know, and I don't care, that is irrelevant really. How many races would Richard Petty have won against Jimmie? Doesn't matter, he isn't racing now and the chase is the way it is now so Jimmie has won four.

2 but it dosent matter for 2 reasons

    1. we are not under the old points system so talking about this is totaly stupid and is doing nothing

    2. all of the drivers knew the points system going into the season and raced differently because of that so they would not have scored the same points if we were back at the old points system which will never return

Quelle(n): jj will always have a star next to his name to point out he won under the chase and yet he still won how many races? and how many top 5s? and how many top 10s? jimmie has joined the right team has the right crew chief and has the perfect chase. how do we stop him? change the races in the chase every year so no driver has an advantage. we dont watch the superbowl in the same place every year do we?
