Prince of Tides - why the name "Lowenstein"?

I stumbled across my question via a second-order citation, after a fashion:

a) Simpsons' episode "Fear of Flying" has Marge Simpson calling her psychiatrist Dr. Zweig "Lowenstein" repeatedly. This is easily explained as portions of that particular show rely on "Prince of Tides".

b) Prince of Tide's psychiatrist (eventually portrayed by Barbara Streisand) goes by the name Dr. Lowenstein.

Why Lowenstein?: AFAIK a certain Rudolph Loewenstein really existed (died 1976), a notable psychiatrist who worked on a theory of suppressed fears. Could this indeed have been an intended reference by the author Pat Conroy?

I'm sure Conroy was familiar with the real Dr. Loewenstein when he wrote the book. Authors do that kind of thing on purpose quite often. In Conroy's latest book, South of Broad, his narrator is named Leopold "Leo" Bloom King, after the hero of James Joyce's "Ulysses".

It is just an attempt by the author to have a very "New York", very jewish name to contrast with the southern characters.
