Gunpowder Plot was a conspiracy by a small group of Catholic extremists to blow up James I and his Parliament on 5 November 1605 .
The plot was uncovered when Lord Monteagle was sent an anonymous letter telling him to stay away from the House on the appointed day.
Guy Fawkes was arrested in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament the day before the scheduled attack and betrayed his colleagues under torture.
The leader of the plot, Robert Catesby , was killed resisting arrest and the rest of the conspirators were captured and executed.
The plot is commemorated by the traditional searching of the vaults before the opening of each session of Parliament, and by bonfires and fireworks, with the burning of an effigy of Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators, annually on 5 November .
Originally it was to be a special thanksgiving service for the life of the King, offered on the day, church bells were to be rung, and the people allowed to celebrate with bonfires and merrymaking. Burning effigies of the Pope and Catholics were all part of the fun!

He was the one caught, trying to set the gunpowder alight.
Robert Catesby Night doesn't have the same ring to it.
Antonia Frazer wrote a good book on the Gunpowder Plot.

Why not? He was the one caught. Seems only fair he should get some credit.Actions speak louder than words.
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...
