There are multiple flood stories from that region, which suggests that there was some great cataclysmic event on a scale that may well have felt like it encompassed the entire world. Folks back then didn't understand complex weather patterns, so these otherwise inexplicable, traumatic and devastating events were given supernatural explanations.

Btw, the story in Torah has two pairs each of the unclean (not for food) animals. The human couples was one family and their spouses, so genetically speaking the diversity should be similar. Your hypothesis here is a red herring, but it also fails to stand up scientifically.

Further evidence has not been needed for well over 200 years. James Hutton pretty much took care of it in 1785, and Creationists have not been able to overcome the basics he laid down at that time.
