Machu Picchu for Acrophobes?

I would *love* to visit Machu Picchu. But I have a real problem with handling hiking along exposed heights, i.e. when there are precipitous drops nearby with no barriers like guard rails. I'm physically capable of the climbing, but it's the psychological effect of nearby drops that freezes me up.

Can anyone who has been to Machu Picchu tell me if they think I could handle the ascent? It's a pretty expensive trip to take only to find out that the climb freaks you out and you can't get there.

I know everyone likes to go to Machu Picchu, but if you're really interested in some ancient ruins, you might want to consider a site called CARAL which is about 2 hours north of Lima. In 2001 a Peruvian archeologist discovered ruins hidden under large dunes. There are bus tours there, but you can also drive there if you have a car. It's amazingly desolate, but fascinating as the site is dated at the time of the Egyptian pyramids, and is therefore much older than Machu Picchu.

I became somewhat cool to the notion of Machu Picchu when I discovered that the Incas were imperialistic and enslaved many neighboring tribes over a large area. Although many see the site as a spiritual oasis, knowing its history dampens the excitement for me.

    Good Luck!!

I got a train there from Cusco, took about 4 hrs, then you get a bus up to Machu Picchu, thats easy. Walking around the ruins shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, you can handle it. you will be in such awe that you will forget about your small issues. Just take your time. Try a gps unit to. It will help you track your steps up and maybe take your mind off things.
