Is school rankings really important in high school?

Well last week I just found out for my freshman year my rank was 22 out of 1275. Now my parents ever since my parents found out, they kept pressuring me to get higher and higher because I'm in a new school, which is much more smaller... There is 800 students in this school....Probably around 200 sophomores.... Is ranking really that important? I don't really understand this "ranking"... Is a 22 out of 1275 good?

Some of these answers are stupid.

Selective colleges look at your class ranking, but it won't prevent you access from the college. If your ranked 35 out of 1275, you can still get into Harvard even if someone ranked 5 gets rejected. As long as your in the top 2% of your class, your fine. 22 is good. It means your the top 2%. It'd be best to aim for the top 0.5% (top 6 rankings), but 2% is fine.

College admission based on SAT scores, GPA, Leadership positions in clubs, Community Service, Sports, and Class rank only. If you don't have one of these, it won't deny you from getting into your school. This being said, your class rank isn't bad.

    Keep up the good work!

  • In my school, they didn't make a big deal out of it until Senior year. The person ranked #1 in our Senior class would get to be the valedictorian, and the other top 5's to follow that person is appointed to take part on the stage during ceremony.

I was ranked #2 and was honored as the Historian. Ranking isn't much important I guess till you get to your Senior year. But that is pretty good I must say, colleges look at ranks too and it will be very impressive for them.

Well it has its pros and cons, it helps you get into a good college. I know some ppl who graduated at the top of our class in high school, and they ended up getting huge scholarships to some top notch schools. One of my friends graduated #2 in his class(frm my school) and got a full scholarship to NYU, and we live all the way out in TX. On top of that, he wanted to be a brain surgeon. 22 out of 1275 is pretty damn good lol. And your a Freshman..imagine when you are a Senior! The cons can be that once u go to college, it's like starting fresh, no one really cares if u graduated top of your class a lot of times, and u have to work even harder than you did in high school. You don't get special treatment for it in college either. I know some ppl who didn't even get scholarships or even get accepted into a school where they wanted to go, after they were "promised" an entrance b/c of their good grades. That's how it was over here in TX, idk about other places though.

Quelle(n): Freshman yr...doesn't matter, when your Junior/Senior yr hits, that's when it really counts. You're on a good path though.

It doesn't really matter. It's just about G.P.A. They do ties too. So 12 people could be tied for first, then the next person just below them would get placed as 13.

22 is excellent. Don't worry about it too much though. As long as you are getting good grades and having fun, that's all that matters.
