How to answer this Biology type of question?
Umm... ok... A U-tube has a selectively permeable membrane that separates Solution A and water, but not Solution B. You add 40 grams of Solution A and 20 grams of Solution B into the water on side 1 of the U-Tube. Then you add 20 grams of Solution A and 40 grams of Solution B into side 2 of the U-Tube. Then they reach equilibrium.
How many grams of Solution A will be on side 1? How many will be on Side 2?
How many grams of Solution B will be on side 1? How many will be on Side 2?
What happened to the water level in the U-Tube.
It will help a lot if you could explain the answers...

I'm assuming you mean the membrane allows water and solution A, and doesn't allow solution B, because movement of water is necessary for osmosis, which is what this problem is about.
The grams of solution B will be the same, 20 grams on side 1 and 40 grams on side 2, because the membrane isn't permeable with respect to solution B.
The grams of solution in A will equal each other in sides 1 and 2 because the membrane allows solution A to move through it. They would have 30 grams of solution A per side.
Water level would increase in side 2 because after solution A has evened out there will be 50 grams total solution in side 1, and 70 grams total solution in side 2. Which means less free water concentration in side 2. A greater total of water molecules will leave side 1 to 2 because there is more free water/less solution in side 1.
