Anyone remember Sanforized?
Remember when you could by Sanforized or other preshrunk clothing, guaranteed not to shrink? Whatever happened to that? Why does everything shrink now?

Here is an interesting article on it's history and the process. I really think the reason we don't see it on garments as often as we did growing up is COST. Many garments are made in SE Asian now mainly because the textile and garment industry there can produce garments much more cheaply than they could be made in the US or Europe. Price and profit are the main objectives, not making quality garments that would last, be durable and not shrink or become misshapen. We just don't keep garments or linens as long as we used to so the expense isn't justified to the manufacturer.

Yeah, Sanforized clothing used a coating of resin and formaldehyde I think on cottons. The problem was that it caused premature damage to the clothing and other problems with washing and stains and health. As for why everything shrinks now, just look at the industry as a whole. Clothing is all manufactured in third world countries but sold in the USA.
Thanks Eskie, I stand corrected on the chemical remark. It was a weaving process hummm....
