can a 18 volt drill battery start a car engine if hooked up right?

this is a debate between my dad and i!--i say it can because it is a battery no matter what and your supposed to have atleast 12 volts to start a normal car engine. remember-if the drill battery was hooked up correctly to everything it has to be hooked up to. thanks

No. You're confusing basic concepts: Voltage and Amperage.

You're looking at around 800 amps @ 7.2 volts to turn a car engine.

If you have an 800 amp drill, I want to use it. Your drill is most likely 2 amps.

When a car is initially cranked, the battery voltage generally drops below 12 volts but supplies over 300 amps, often even more.

The 18 volt battery in a cordless drill might manage to click the starter relay in, but that would be the end of it - the starter motor wouldn't turn but it would pull every thing that battery has to offer and there's a good chance the battery would quickly over heat or explode.

Eighteen volts is not cold cranking amps and that is what it takes to start a vehicle. 300 or better is what you need and that little 18 volt battery is not going to cut it. If anything, it might just blow up in your face. Do it the right way and stop messing around.

Not on it`s best day, and there is no such thing as hooking up a dry cell battery to a car "right"

No - because you need a lot more current.

Think of stalling the drill with your hand. If you had the same current as a starter motor - you would snap your wrist.

    Nope.

    Not enough amperage.
