I have a pregnancy question?
Im not pregnant just curious. I was watching television on a show was on about expectant moms they were getting nervous because their due dates were here but the baby wasn't coming out. I'm Curious though I know it's bad to have a baby ahead of schedule your dealing with a premature baby but whats so wrong with waiting until the baby i ready to come out instead of inducing is it bad for a baby to be in the womb longer for exactly nine months? I hear that being inside the womb is the safest place so why immediately at nine months the rush to remove it(besides the fact your tired of being pregnant)
Thanks everyone for such good answers:) A lot of things you guys have explained that I had no idea about thanks again

first of all, once you get to about 36 weeks everything starts getting annoying - people, husbands/boyfriends, pains, cramps, etc. and all you want to do is get the baby out. you feel huge and can't move around much. you aren't sleeping and you eat small meals ... so inducing labor is something some of us desperately want. I want it - if i could take a knife and cut him out right now, I would.
with that said, at 37 weeks doctors consider the baby to be full term and will take the baby out with little worry. during the last 4-5 weeks, the baby gains about 1/2 lb a week but has little room to move or grow, so the shoving and pushing on the mother that the baby does is highly annoying. doctors don't typically like the baby to say in the womb past 42 weeks because of the lack of room and distress the baby might endure.
just wait until you get pregnant and you are getting closer and closer to your due date, all you want to do is get the baby out. it's like waiting for Christmas as a child ... what if your parents told you that you had to wait an extra two weeks to open your presents - how would you feel?

If the baby is in there too long it can cause complications. Also, the baby will continue to grow and that makes it very very hard to deliver. If we left babies to come out on their own, they might never come out! Most doctors do not go in right at 40 weeks and induce. They usually will wait for a few more days or even weeks sometimes, as long as all is fine. If the baby is not out by 42 weeks then the baby will probably not be able to come out on its own. That's my understanding of it anyway.

The thing is as the baby gets past its due date, it is still growing. The size can become dangerous and make it harder for the mother to deliver the baby safely, which results in emergency c-sections which can cause more risk to the baby. Also the baby could end up having a bowel movement inside the uterus which can cause the baby to contact an infection that is extremely dangerous to its health.

If the baby grows too large, the woman's entire abdominal muscles have to be cut open to remove the baby, also her uterus will scar, possibly preventing future pregnancy. Full term babies are 37 weeks - 40 weeks, after that, the baby can grow very big, very fast - too big for the pelvis to let it out!

because after 40 weeks the placenta can stop working which cuts off babys blood and oxygen supply which could end in the death of the baby, so women will only be allowed to gp past their due date by 2 weeks to prevent this from happening

The baby gets to a size that the nutrients they receive from mom just isn't cutting it anymore and they start to lose weight. There is also risk of infection to mom if she is even slightly dialated. So it just makes sense to get things going if you go a week over due for the safety of mom and babe.

Every day its in the womb its growing bigger and if it gets to big you have to have a c-section cuz it won't fit through the birth canal. Plus it gets really uncomfortable when it gets bigger.

you can actually have baby from 36weeks - 42weeks. after 42weeks the placenta begins to deteriorate.
