I really can't answer this for anyone else but me.
I did not even realize before, there was an "afterlife" until I had a near-death experience, following my last suicide attempt. This turned my life upside down and and straight back up by 360*!
Ever since, I have spent every available day, hour minute serving God and others who have fallen through the cracks of society.
Whether they were homeless, addicted, abused or dejected - in alleys, in riverbeds, tents or living out of a vehicle - when God called, I was there, without hesitation, no matter how inconvenient, how much dissension it caused, if it was appreciated or not. I did this for over twenty-five years and loved every minute of it.
I did not do this for reward, now or later. What we do with the life we have, while we have life, is so vitally important in the hereafter.
I remember when I was little I was told; if you borrow something, return it in better condition than when you received it.
This is what I have learned about "life".
We are here temporarily. While we are here, we are supposed to make a difference, leave a legacy, or just leave this world better than when we arrived.
Our thoughts, feelings, words and actions have a profound impact on everything and everyone else, because all life is connected.
As we leave this world, all the good we contributed, will determine our resonating "peace", thereafter.

In order for us to live we have to die first. But they don't believe in the afterlife because they choose not to. It's okay really because God will show them the truth one day so just let it be what it is.

The better question is why do people believe in an afterlife. Not one shread of evidence for it.
We die because we're biological machines and all machines get old and worn out and break down eventually.

we die because our bodies can only survive for so long. I do not believe in an afterlife because I do not believe there is a god.

There is a tremendous amount of proof that life ends in death.
For those who choose to ignore real evidence, what proof would convince them of flimsy ideas such as life after death, angels or astral traveling? The answer is: ANY ideas that agree with what they already believe.

People usually, If they don't believe in the afterlife, don't believe because they just want to believe they can disprove what they don't want to except.

No proof it exist, I not sit in hard seat every Sunday, hear awful gospel music, listen boring sermon full of lies of after life, then pay much money hear such nonsense, die have nothing relevant of after life or not, cells of living creatures wear out after so many replications, is that simple, is no deity make it occur, is just natural process.

We die because our cells can't keep repairing themselves.
No proof of the afterlife either. Not one single bit of evidence.

We die because our bodies over time start breaking down and stop functioning.
