Okay, This is tricky because you could act on emotions and not on logic. Now you say you and this guy talk to each other sometimes, this is sometimes not enough. i think you should first establish a better relationship with him, see where his head is. Now the gay marriage question is a great move and I applaud you for thinking that far ahead of the game. This is why I highly suggest, talking to him more and you could also work that question in somewhere. Another thing is that give that you KNOW he has dated girls before, that is also very difficult. All you know now is that he is straight. A thing to your advantage is that he's single now, that brings me to... The computer thing is brilliant. Do it. That should give you some clearance to pursue him if he should say yes to this question. I say you have your plan straight, but just don't be disappointed if the worst happens. I think if he gets a random text from a stranger asking him if he is gay or not he will probably say no.

Just have a long chat with him if you can and see what you can get out of him. Try not to be too direct as you might scare him off....just be subtle but nice. The question about gay marriage is probably a good starter...just make your views clear too.
