Stitch on hook/eye fastener with sewing machine?
Does anybody have a source for instructions on how to use a sewing machine to attach a wire hook/eye fastener? All this fine little black-on-black hand-sewing is making me crosseyed.

Narrow zigzag, stitch length at zero.
Walk the hand wheel (move with you hand and not the foot control) to make sure you have the right width.
Feed dogs can be disengaged, but the zero stitch length will stop their movement.
To finish, tie off or stitch in place at the beginning and end to lock the stitches.
If you do this with out the presser foot, the presser foot lever needs to be down for the tension to control the feed of the thread through the needle.

Machine sewing hook & eye fasteners will likely result in broken needles. You can machine sew a contrasting (even dark gray) ribbon onto your piece where the hook & eye fasteners have to be applied, then you won't be sewing black-on-black anymore. If you are for some reason sewing the fasteners to the front of your piece (meaning the ribbon would have to be visible) you can instead use a piece of tape or a scrap of loose-woven fabric that wouldn't be too difficult to remove after the fasteners are applied. Those are the only tricks I have come across so far. Good luck!

use a little piece of Scotch invisible tape and tape on the hoop.Drop the feed dogs and set the machine to a narrow zigzag. Most machines you need to remove the presser foot, or use the sewing on a button presser foot. Start sewing very slow to make sure the needle doesn't hit anything, sew a few more stitches and the hook is attached. It's a similar process to sewing a button on by machine. Most manuals and many sewing books have these instructions.

It sounds like the thread tension is bad, that is why your stitches are loose. I have my Mom's old Singer sewing machine and it did the same thing. Since it is older you may want to have it cleaned and oiled by a sewing repair shop at least once a year. On mine it is a bar with a screw like knob and you twist it either way to change the tension. Try this on some scraps of fabric to see if the stitches tighten. Your manual should suggest the correct tension for what you want to do. Or take some sewing classes at a local fabric store if they are offered and they should go through the basics and have books. Stick with it, once you get the hang of it you can do anything! Good Luck!
