ND Experience: When was the first recorded account of a person seeing a tunnel with a light at the end of it?

Most everyone has heard of Near Death Experiences where the person says they saw a tunnel/hallway/cave/corridor/etc. with a light at the end of it.

For my question I am not concerned about what people might think causes the experience.

What I am looking for is the earliest recorded written reference about the experience. The account of the experience can be from ANY WRITTEN SOURCE including accounts referenced in fiction material. However, the description must be of a closed passage where the only movement choices are forward or backwards AND has a blinding/very bright light. (This would eliminate traveling on rivers, rainbows, or other open areas.)

The earliest accounts I have found so far (with both conditions) have been in the 1900’s (1950’s to be exact). I have found much earlier references of just the “tunnel” or just the “light”, not both together.

Again what I am looking for is the earliest documentation where a person after a near death experience described seeing (or being in) a “tunnel” AND a bright “light”, not a debate if the experience is real or what might cause it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Update:

Thanks artsy08dream for the references. It is interesting information.

But not really what I am looking for.

As we all know there are many different descriptions of the things that happened to people during NDE’s. Unlike others accounts that vary greatly though out the world as well as changes though out time. This particular experience seems to be relatively common though out the developed world and amazingly across religious boundaries. Though granted the Christian perspective seems to be the most commonly reported.

What is interesting to me is that this particular description also seems to have coincided with the invention and subsequent use of a particular device.

So before I present my hypothesis I need to verify that there are NO accounts of the tunnel and light description before the late 1950’s.

Update 2:

While I do believe that there are truly spiritual NDE’s as well as unexplainable things that have happened to people that were on the edge of death. This particular experience I believe has a very simple explanation. Especially when experienced by people that were not really in any serious danger of dieing.

But for the hypothesis to “hold water” the description of a hallway/corridor with a bright light cannot have happened before 1950.

Thus the reason I am looking for accounts of only this particular description before 1950.

As The Bible teaches:

Proverbs: 14:15:

The simple believeth every word:

but the prudent man looketh well to his going. (KJV)

Or put another way.

A simple man believes every word he hears;

a clever man understands the need for proof. (New English Bible 1970)

I hope there will be a few more helpful answers before the close of this question.

Thanks in advance for everyone’s help.

Update 3:

Unfortunately there does not appear to be anyone else going to answer this question.

I am sure a lot of people read this question. I want to thank everyone, though you may have been tempted, for not posting garbage answers.

artsy08dream thanks again for the references, I will be digging though the information as well as the sources referenced in the material for a while. As I said above interesting and I do appreciate it. Though I was hoping someone could point to one specific case. (If it exists)

As for my personal beliefs when it comes to NDEs, I believe there are some NDEs that are very real that can not be explained by science (at least not at our current technology or level of understanding).

I also believe that there are a great many NDE experiences which are told that are false, exaggerated and exploited for reasons other than Glorifying Our Lord.

Edgar Cayce (healer, disciple of Christ 1877-1945)a famous person with 14,000 near death experiences and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross(Death and Dying book).

doctor from Chattanooga, TN wrote four books about it. His name is Dr. Maurice Rawlings. He wrote four books on this experience: Beyond Death's Door (1979), To Hell And Back, Life Wish:Reincarnation, Reality or Hoax? and Before Death Comes. Dr, Raymond Moody in the 1975 developed this concept; wrote a book Life after Life. I tried to interview him, no luck.

Quelle(n): I read his book. Look up the tunnel Death Experience on Yahoo; final frontier.org; I'm a published writer, studied Hebrew and Greek, went to his same church, Have 27 years experience working with severe mental illness.

It's an evolutionary archetypal vision of when we used to live in caves. It represents coming out of the womb (or tomb) of the earth and into the light of awareness.
