WHY can't I keep using old versions of Yahoo IM?
It's maddening. I am still using a very old, homemade computer- with Windows ME in it. It's a good computer- I've done my "homework" and this computer just screams along. I have no desire to "upgrade" to XP just yet- XP is more full of holes than this OS is!
So now I'm being informed by Yahoo IM that in August, my version of it won't work anymore.
This just isn't right somehow. I get the feeling that Yahoo just wants everyone to have a version that can put ads in front of them???
I do NOT want any over-bloated IM or need it.

You are going to have to upgrade to at least IM8 if not you will not be able to use messenger. I know it stinks but I guess we do not have a choice. IM9 has to many problems so IM8 is the lesser of the two evils I guess. Good luck!!!

Well, if you really won't be able to use the older messenger anymore, you can switch to another software that can run the yahoo protocols. Personally i recommend Pidgin. It takes up few resources and is highly customizable. Of course there are tons of other programs that can take the place of the "official" yahoo software and work just as fine.. take Trillian or Miranda (I think) for example.
All three are free and ad-free and you can use your yahoo account with them to chat with your yahoo contacts. Still.. I recommend Pidgin because of the aforementioned few resources it takes up. Hope this helped.

I sympathise and agree...
The world seems to be driven by people who want to change things for... Well, just because.
I have clung to v.7, but I am now plagued by the notice to upgrade: but I don't want voices, games, silly-moving-smileys, web-cams, noises, sounds, pop-tunes....
As for ignoring it - it is now wiping out the offline messages, so I have to do something.
Meanwhile, as I type, a stupid pop-up is complaining that I am using too much punctuation! Obviously, it also wants me to upgrade my language skills, to the all-graphic-abbreviated, slang-ridden rubbish fostered by....
Oh, what the hell - I'm going to download "Pidgin", as suggested.

Usually bugs are fixed in newer versions.
This has nothing to do with putting ads in front of them. It's just so your IM is running smoothly =)
