Basic Sewing Question - Fusible Web?
I'm learning how to sew, obviously I didn't pay attention in 7th grade home ec class nearly 20 years ago and I've got time on my hands to learn something new. So I'm starting off making a very basic baby towel. (the kind with the little hood on the corner of the towel) The hood will have a little teddy bear cut out sewn on. The instructions tell me to iron fusible web onto the back of the teddy bear cut out. How do you do this?
I asked the employee at JoAnn Fabrics to show me what "Fusible Web" was. She gave me 1 yard of it and it's like a huge sheet of "bounce" fabric softener. Anyway, there is no paper backing on it, just a full yard of this stuff.
I've searched the internet and can't figure out for the life of me how to apply it. I tried ironing it to the dang cut out. BIG MISTAKE, it freakin' melted onto the iron. HAHA!
Sewing gurus please share your knowledge. Thanks!!!!

The web goes between the fabric and whatever you want to fuse on to it. You don't iron the web itself. You put a piece of it on top of the fabric and underneath the cut-out, and iron on top of the cut-out. If the cut-out can't take much direct heat, put some thin fabric on top of it and iron through that. The fabric on top isn't a bad idea anyway with small fiddly things, in case they shift a little. Use steam, a hottish setting according to your fabrics, hold the iron still on the piece for at least 10 seconds while pressing firmly, and let the piece cool before handling. You can buy this kind of webbing in packages too, in a ribbon form (Stitch Witchery is one brand), and those packages often have instructions on them. They should have explained this at Jo-ann.

You want to make your teddy bear cutout into an applique. There are so many new products out on the market for this type of application.
If you want to use an iron and the hood is not already attached to the corner of the towel, I highly recommend Heat and Bond. It is a fusible webbing with a backing that is first ironed to the teddy bear then to the hood from the hood's underside.
The easiest and fastest way is to use glue. Yes, there is now a fabric glue that is totally washable. It is an amazing product that every home should stock. It comes in several brands and can be found in either the glue aisle or the notions section of JoAnn Fabrics. Two brands that come to mind are Unique Stitch and OKay to Wash. You will find a gazillion uses for this glue. It is great for all sorts of home projects and clothing, crafts, lamp shade trims and so on.
Glad to hear that you are taking up sewing in your spare time. There are not many seamstresses out there these days. I wish you sew much luck.
