You probably burned a data CD. Use Nero Vision application & choose to make a video CD (VCD) or super video CD (SVCD). They will both play on your computer. A SVCD will also play on some DVD players.

You may try convertxtodvd, I know it can add subtitle file into video. You can also use it to burn avi video to DVD-R disc.
