What is your understanding of "soul"?

Soul is the essence of one's being, it is what makes us be here in the now. So it is not the mind, it is not the body or emotions. It is that which can experience those things. I would equate soul with consciousness. Our awareness in the moment. But as we can observe, our ability to be aware fluctuates, which suggests that the soul is not what it can be. It is something that must be developed so that when the body and mind die, awareness can continue being aware in the now.

The soul is self-evident; in other words, you can "feel" it.

It is explained by naturalist scientists as no more than the physiology of the brain causing emotional feelings. This, however, sidesteps the issue of metaphysics.

These scientists say the soul does not exist because it is nothing but physiology. But they don't say the hand, the heart, the eyeball is only physiology, and they apply the proper name. Their point is to try to remove the "supernatural" element of the soul, to make the point that it is merely "natural."

I agree. It is natural, not supernatural, but let's call a spade a spade. The soul exists. Those emotions we feel when our soul is set in motion are the judgment calls of our conscience. Our soul pains us when we do things we believe are wrong. Our souls soar when something humanly wonderful has happened.

The soul is the notion that the self can survive the demise of the body.

It is the presumption that the self is transcendent.

A soul is the poetic sense that self is something beyond a biological control system based solely on the mechanism of the brain.

The soul is eternal on loan from God and will return to its begginnings after fulfilling it's destiny.

PS. the seat of the sould is the divine proportion that some are allowed to partake of.

We are spiritual beings, who live in a physical body, and we possess a soul, which is the seat of all intellect and emotion.

An imaginary essence of an individual! Everybody knows that we die and decay, so to believe that we are punished or rewarded by god (also an imaginary concept) after we die, the 'soul', or inner, unseen essence was developed. It gives a kind of comfort, albeit falsely, that there is a life after death. Nice, but alas, completely imaginary.

My understanding is that nobody really knows or understands what a soul is.People have different notions of soul and all believe their version to be true.The fact may be altogether different and we don't know what it is.
