What would cause the sound to go out on the computer?

Hardware:

Turn the speakers on and the volume up. Unplug and plug everything back in. Listen for crackling.

Windows:

Start-> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sound and Audio devices. click advanced. Ensure all the relevant sliders are up and not muted.

Also, Right click on 'My Computer' and choose 'manage'. Select device manager. Make sure you have correct drivers installed for all sound and multimedia components. You may need to re-install the drivers.

Trial and error:

Try plugging your speakers into a different source? Do they work? Could the problem be your speakers?

Try different audio software?

Try a different audio card if possible?

The idea here is to eliminate one part of the chain, test it and then put it back and move on the the next link.
