Why do people clap at the end of a movie? It's not like the intended parties can receive the accolades?
So I saw Star Trek on Saturday and it was a good movie but I really didn't understand why these people in their mid 40's kept laughing hysterically at different intervals in the movie. (i.e. when Scotty got sucked into the water pipes - the people next to us were laughing like Louis Sculnik from Revenge of the Nerds.)
Anyway at the end of the movie maybe 10 people started clapping furiously.
I wonder why - do you clap after you watch a DVD at home? It's not like we're at a Broadway Play or the Symphony where the actors/directors etc can receive the praise. Odd, profoundly odd...

I'm use to going to Advanced Screenings. ;_;
Some times part of the cast or the director is in the audience. They also take audience reactions as clues to various things.
It becomes a habit to be a little noisy and clap.
I haven't seen the movie, but the scene you described has appeared in movies before. There may have been a joke to it ( especially if the actor playing Scotty was in one of these movies).
As for furious clapping at the end... you get use to it if you see Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, a Quinton Tarantino movie,.. etc. .. soon after it's release into theaters.
The fans are excited, relieved, thankful,.. so many emotions.. yes, they go nuts. It's normal. They also giggle over new merchandise... helping them connect to something that's a religion and brings back their childhood.

It's just a way to express their enjoyment, not necessarily so people can hear. Also somewhat social -- the experience of seeing a movie as part of a big group that also enjoyed it is different from watching alone at home. Consider it a little mutual fellowship.
BTW in many cultures people clap when the airplane they're travelling on lands, when the bus reaches its final destination etc.... just a little "thank you'.

They applaud because they really liked the movie but I see what you're saying.
Some people do clap even when they're at home watching a movie too. I've been with friends renting a movie and they've applauded.

Applause isn't just for the performers to hear. It's a way for the people in the audience to commune with one another.

It's kind of fun and shows their appreciation.
