Tick on my dog.......?

I noticed a tick this evening on my little Yorkshire Terrier dog on the chest area. I managed to remove the tick (hopefully I have got the head too) and it has left a lump on my dog. He seems perfectly fine, has had his flea and tick treatment, but I am just wondering - what symptoms should I look for to see if my dog is infected from the tick apart from the obvious swelling even more of the wound area? Is there anything I can do further to ensure my dog is ok?

As it is Saturday evening naturally the vet is not open and I will of course take my dog to the vet on Monday, I just need to know what I should be looking out for as neither of my dogs have ever had a tick before to my knowledge.

Thanks for any help yo may be able to give me.

lt's normal for the spot where the tick was to swell and go red, the swelling will go down in a few days, so don't worry, you can apply some antiseptic to the area to help clean it, but there's no need to see the vet.

lt takes at least 48 hours for a tick to transmit disease to your dog, but if you have applied tick treatment (Frontline plus or similar) then the tick would have started to die as soon as it started to feed on the blood and be dead within 48 hours. Although l always like to remove them as soon as l see one, the less time it spends on my dog the better.

my 3 year old westie cairn cross was in kennels for 2 weeks and when I picked him up I immediately noticed a red/brown thing on his upper eyelid- thought it was a leaf but showed it to the kennel staff (who came with various recommends who said it was a tic, maybe from sheep or other dog/mammal in their woods. A special pair of plastic tweezers was used to remove the entire tic-head,teeth-the lot !

I am still a bit annoyed that they did not notice but luckily my dog gets regular FRONTLINE/AVOCET treatment. The kennels did not offer an apology (!!) and I notice that the dog has quite a large swelling where the tic was removed from but believe this is normal but should be watched-maybe a bit of hydrocortisone. If any changes in health I am advised to go to the vet. In the USA, where I have just been, they have BIG problems with tics on dogs especially in Florida. The US Dept responsible for advice on these things also say to use special tic tweezers. The tic should NOT be sent down the toilet or squished somewhere as this can extend more problems despite such action. Tic should be put in a small bottle and some alcohol or even petrol placed over it and leave for 24 hours before disposal in a plastic bag in the rubbish. Tics in the Uk are NOT considered to carry LYME disease and it is rash for people to make statements that will worry people.

I specifically any situation that your pet is exposed to something like tics or appears unwell or may even have eaten some rat poisioned meat the owner knows the dog best and how it normally acts. Any changes such as lethargy or sickness then the VET is the person to see otherwise the pet is at risk due to ignorance. Even if you cannot afford it still call the vet, tell them the problems and say you need help as your money situation is not good- most good vets will help you without delay.

Lumps where the tic was are normal but should be monitored closely but may take time to go down. My view is that after a week if the lump has not reduced then the VET can ensure the head has been removed properly. REMEMBER - tics can carry a variety of diseases but that does not mean either the pet or a person will get a disease BUT as with all things common sense is best and this is also one of the main reasons why the removed tic should be disposed of as above so that any disease goes with it.

Removing the tick is all you can do for now.

Its important to use tweezers so you can get as close to the attachment site as possible.

When using tweezers you typically are able to remove the tick and mouth parts.

When you just use your fingers your grip tends to slip and you don't get all the parts of the tick.

If you do not get the mouth parts/head the body will expel it as it heals.

Its always wise to have your dog tested for lyme disease.

Symptoms of lyme disease are a rotating front limb lameness, limping of the forelimbs, restlessness, decreased appetite, fever, lethargy.

Your vet can do a quick in hospital test called a 4DX.

It tests for lyme, ehrlichia and anaplasmosis as well as heartworm disease.

It important to use frontline or a Preventic collar as tick borne diseases can lead to kidney failure(lyme) and clotting problems(anaplasmosis)

If frontline is used properly ticks may attach to the dog but are killed before they are able to transmit disease.

I think the symptoms of tick fever take a while to develop and normally dogs don't get it without being bitten by several ticks.

The normal symptoms are that the dog will feel hot to touch and have no energy.

Its good that you are taking your dog to the vets just in case.

    Ja.

wash you're dog focusing on you're dog's chest area , with flea and tick shampoo then apply some flea and tick treatment.

you won't have to worry about this it isn't to serious were its necessary to bring her/him to the vet by the way.

I heard you can burn them off. I'm pretty sure ticks carry Lime Diease, you might want to find another vet and see if anywhere is open, just to be on the safe side.
