Why is my dog scared of people?
My female Basset Hound is really scared of people other than our family. Every time I take her on walks and she sees somebody she goes nuts, and tries to run away, she's gotten out of her collar before on a walk because of a person, and it was a pain to get her back. And it's not just other people, she gets scared at every little thing, whether it's a stuffed animal, a new toy, or anything like that. I got her from a breeder in Texas, and she flew here to arizona on a plane ride, so im wondering if that may be a reason why shes so scared of everything. Anyone have any ideas?
She is 1 year, almost 2 years, and her half brother, we got from the same breeder, and got him the same way, but hes not scared of people, just guys, he simply loves females though.

I have recently adopted a 9 month old shepherd that was badly abused and the opposite has happened to me almost he has developed separation anxiety and has attached himself to me and destroys things if i am gone. This behavior will have to be taught to get a change start by walking her in the yard or close to home stopping when someone approaches and petting her and talking to her until they have passed and then proceed. You will in time be able to continue on without delay and as new people come around maintain her on a leash at home and talk to her quietly and let new friends approach slowly . DO NOT expect a change over night, she has obviously been traumatized and it will be slow progress. If you love her she will be ok. Also use a harness type leash so that she cannot slip out, i do not recommend a choke chain, because she will just get more panicked by being choked, Good luck

Socialization.
If there's seriously something mentally wrong with her, (like her past) call the breeder. Also, you shouldn't ship puppies. It's better to go to their house and pick them up, and ride them home in your car/walk back come.
The plane ride probably did it. She could still be dizzy from all of the events crashing before her eyes. Leaving her littermates and mother and everything she knew to take a frighteningly long trip on an airplane filled with noisy humans, all by herself, not having a clue what the heck is going on.
Then, she's shipped to your house, and suddenly has a new layout, again. She's probably still a little scared by the plane, or by her breeder. The breeder's neighbors who walk around on the streets or something could've hurt her while she was outside, and she associated that to everybody who she sees outside.
My advice, take her to a socialization class. If it doesn't work, try telling the breeder about her, and ask questions about her, but don't be too accusing. Then, you should call the vet and see if something is wrong with her.

You don't mention how old she is. If she is a pup, she could be going through a fear period. No matter what it sounds like she needs to work on her socialization skills. You could try simply going to a park and doing some people watching for a bit rewarding for a simple calm down or sit. Eventually work up to being closer and closer to other people. You can also try having her start to meet your friends etc at home where she might feel more comfortable. Have them offer a treat to come say hi. I would also recommend getting involved in obedience which will introduce her to some new things in a controlled environment.

Her past has something to do with her present behavior. Don't worry because this kind of behavior can be treated in many ways. One of them is through socialization. More tips here,

Maybe she got so close to her old owner but then gave her away to u so maybe she just really cant trust people or just doesnt want to get close to any one else

Maybe she isn't well socialized and isn't used to people and stuff like that. Ask a trainer about how you can get her to stop. They can help you.
