be careful crossing the street..seriously. treat people fairly and friendly as this is how you will be treated . at the same time be weary of "hustlers". never wave your cell phone around in the air.. it will get snatched right out of your hand... get good rain gear, get a good driver[motorbike driver to take you around].. dont smoke the air in saigon is enough taxation for your lungs. bring anti biotic with you and cold meds.. check out the "resolved questions" on this site for "tons" of great info on viet nam and sai gon...
Quelle(n): add on; ..take young "caathy's" advice , she makes some good points esspecially about carrying tissues... anyway .. go to your library get a tape on vietnamese and lern a few phrases.. it WILL be worth ALL the time you spend studying and more.. - vor 1 Jahrzehnt
Just like the above answer, really be careful about crossing the street, it gets crazy sometimes. Try your best not to look like foreigner or else you'll be surrounded by children and adult beggars, trying to sell you lottery tickets or beg you for money. When that happens, if you choose to spare some money, keep it on the down low, especially with children. They'll go tell their friends and such, and then you'll be drained or harrassed. Try to be as kind to people as you possibly can. People there aren't nice like here in North America, and if you're not nice, you'll get yelled in your face.
Uhh...Hm. BRING NAPKINS. like, go to the dollar store and buy those pocket tissues. Vietnam has TERRIBLE bathrooms. They smell terrible, they're usually just a hole in the ground, as well, and they definatley DO NOT have toilet paper. Bring the pocket tissues around with you in your purse or something, just in case.
Keep things close to you , for example your purse or wallet. They'll get taken easily if you're careless.
Stay away from the stray dogs. Although they are just innocent and hungry (most of them are at least...they won't bite most of the time), they usually carry disease. I personally am afraid of dogs, so it was no problem for me.
Keep your clothes light coloured and short. Vietnam is amazingly hot. Not even like humid. Just plain old hot. If you're doing shopping in markets, it usually just has a fan in the ceiling of the store. It's terrible. It gets really hot, smelly, and disgusting sometimes if you're in a cramped place.
Augh, I'm sorry this is terribly long...there's just so many things to say about it there, especially Saigon.
This is all I can really think of off the top of my head.
So even though it sounds...not - so - good, Vietnam is still great, no matter what :) Have a fun time ~
