Do side-jobs pay off?
I hit a bit of a rough patch and am wondering if, in addition to my week-day work, I should take one for my weekends, as a waiter or something.
Do these kind of jobs pay in Britain or is it all taxed away?
Thanks!

All legitimate earnings are subject to deduction of tax. Working as a waiter, you are likely to be paid close to the national minimum wage, but have the opportunity to be paid tips. Depending on where you are working these can be quite a bit of money.
You will need to consider the effect of your additional employment on your main job. You might need your employer's permission to have a second job. You might also need to opt-out of the maximum 48 hour week.

It obviously depends on what kind of work you do, but most people can only take on poorly paid work like bar work or waitressing for a second job, and in this case yep, you would be taxed so highly that it probably wouldn't be worthwhile.
I had a friend that took on a cash-in-hand job in a bar, so obviously she wasn't paying tax on that. This is highly illegal but I think I personally would risk it for a short time period, as you could play dumb and class it as "helping out a friend" and because it's unlikely that anyone would find out if you did it for a short time. But, if you do that then you have no rights as a worker - she was just told one day not to bother coming back tomorrow so given no notice, and obviously she couldn't do anything about it. If you want to have a go at something like that then look on Gumtree for ads.

i won't be able to land a respectable or low paying interest for that count. no count if I interview with women folk, Martians, or men, I in no way had a subject getting employment while i became into 18, green, naive, and youthful. Ten years later, that's not proper if I interview with women folk, Martians, or men, properly, I in no way get any of the jobs that I prepare or interview for because of the fact the interest industry is so poor, flooded, and aggressive that agencies are being choosy. I went to a commerce college two times, and that i desperate i'm beginning over and dealing on my Bachelors diploma at a interior sight authorised college because of the fact I have been given nowhere looking employment using I even have for "coaching" two times on my resume. i visit discover employment this time. This recession and interest industry won't be able to be this undesirable constantly.

every paid job (legal) is taxed which is why the blackmarket does well over here, However if you become self employed and work within the system it is possible to become quite secure financially and different jobs come under a different tax system where you claim seperately for each individual job (providing it is a differing skill or contract) which allows a greater return in terms of actual cash.
If you work as a waiter you can claim for shoes and clothing against your tax returns as they are 'job specific'.
Get the right leaflets from the local tax office or telephone or go on the link for inland revenue and get the right information for the best way forwards.
Regards.....best wishes. Susan
