Landscaping ideas for Ohio weather?

We bought our first home last July and the landscaping is awful.  This spring we want to dig up all the old crap around the house (dead bushes, old limestone...) and put down new topsoil and plant some flowers and trees/bushes.  We will be putting down river rock over top and want to put up some nice edging as well.  We have easter lillies coming up right now and we would like to save them and re plant them.  What else will look nice and bloom well in Ohio weather?  Flower suggestions for the front of house with lots of sunlight?  Tree/bush suggestions?  (I want something that is dark purple in color )

Some of what you plant may depend on your planting zone.

Go to a local nursery where the people know their business (with plans in hand) and they will help you select the right soil and plants for the area.

Take drainage into consideration.   Digging around a foundation can lead to water seeping into the basement or crawl space.  A damp crawl space is inviting to termites.

Lilac bushes would be nice (you can get darker shades), or purple butterfly bushes.  If you want a good contrast to the purple, you might also try forsythia.  For any area, I'd recommend pansies for a low-growing flower.  You might also try irises for some early summer color.  Go to your local garden shop and browse the plants and seeds, too--you might find something you fall in love with besides these.
