Is there such a thing as mathematical dyslexia?
Talking to a brother with severe dyslexia, I realised I handle numbers exactly the same way he handles words. I can do most things in my head, but the second I have to convert it to paper .... disaster.
Using a formula and calculator, I can do exactly what the formula asks but have noooo idea why the answer is what it is.
If I write down a phone number, I will put numbers back to front and upside down. Yet I can recall a number and speak it out correctly.
I've often wondered if any research has been done on this, and whether or not there is any programs developed to help the numerically challenged.

Yes, it's called dyscalculia. I have had it ever since kindergarten. However. I learned 'point math' and then use a calculator to perform math. I also use digital watches. So my learning disability is undetectable most times. I've even worked in finance offices with these aids. My supervisors don't care how I obtain the answer as long as I get it correctly and am on time to the office. Success is possible.

I have no idea if there is such a thing. But I have problems with numbers too. I am constantly reversing numbers. I can read them correctly and say them correctly but if I have to write them down something is usually reversed unless I really concentrate on what I am doing.
I'm just happy that there is someone else that has my problem. I quit college because I had to take advanced algebra. I couldn't handle it. I knew how to get the answers but not on paper. I've been dealing with this for many years. I'm 36 now. I thought I was just stupid with math. Now I know I'm not crazy. Other people have problems too.

It's called dyscalculia. Do a google search to get info about it. Also, if you have questions and need help, go to this message board. The people there will be glad to help !! There are programs to help this and the people at this board can tell you more -

Are you in school? If so, are they helping you with it? Are you in special ed to get help for this? In public schools, they are not obligated to help with ANY special problems unless the student is in special ed.
