Does the lack of dreams have any significance?

What is it supposed to mean when you have no memory of dreams for an extended time? It is common belief that everyone dreams when they sleep. I used to remember many of my dreams, often very vividly. Most times when I woke up I would at least know that I did dream even if I couldn't piece it together. In the past 2 months, I have only had one dream that I was aware of; with a similar pattern over 2-3 years. So, does not dreaming mean anything to interpreters?

Update:

When I was still an undergrad (and back thru late high-school) I had a little dream journal that helped with vividness and recall. But even when I couldn't remember details I at least had the sensation that I had an experience of some sort. I believe I still am having dreams and was just wondering if there was an interpretation to a sustained 'lack' of dreams, similar to what you can find in books and whatnot. I guess stress and poor sleep could be it.

What you are describing is actually just a lack of dream recall, not a lack of dreams. If you were not dreaming, you would not have been entering REM sleep, and if you had spent the past two months without any REM sleep you would probably be seeking the help of a doctor rather than yahoo answers. Anyhow, dream recall is largely dependent on your physiology, which can be affected by your diet (most importantly what you eat before you go to bed) and how much stress you have. If there is something weighing on your mind, you have a busy schedule, you are much more likely to just start thinking about that than you are to keep thinking about the dream you just had. However, if you are generally stress free, your mind will continue to process the dream until you wake up and you will be much more likely to remember it. Also, the time span between when your dream ends and when you actually wake up could be playing a part, try shortening the amount of sleep you get to a multiple of 45 minutes and then try to remember your dream. Lastly, any new medications you are taking could have shifted your physiology and be hampering your dream recall.

Some tips to correct the problem are to try to reduce your stress level, try having a glass of milk or some cheese before you go to bed (dairy has can increase the vividness of dreams and dream recall, but has also been reported to cause nightmares, so look up some other foods with effects on dreams yourself and find the best one for you), or change the length of time you are sleeping. Also, asserting to yourself that you are going to remember your dream several times before you go to bed can have a positive effect. Try to think of any changes in your life or lifestyle that coincide with your loss of dream recall and work to counteract it.

Prescriptions, alcohol, and illegal drugs can cause disruptions in your sleep patterns and rob you of your dreams and your deep rest. Which contribute to insomnia and other sleep disorders that in turn prevent proper sleep cycles. Thereby restricting your dreaming capacity even more, making the non-sleep part of your days miserable and causing you to take drugs. (Encouraging the cycle to continue.)

It could also be depression. Depression can cause sleep that is empty and black. You may sleep to escape the reality, to protect yourself. And that escape is sometimes to a place that is not necessarily happy, but nothing. Blankness is soothing to a jangled mind.

Or perhaps you are dreaming now and when you sleep you awake to find nothing there.

It could be a lack of comfort. Such as, the amount of sleep you get, where you sleep, and your surroundings.

If you don't dream, you're not alone, millions of people don't, including me. However, you do have them still!
