New betta tank???????
I'm am going to be buying a new tank for my betta, Henry shortly and I was wondering what tank size and supplies I will need to make happy and healthy. He's doing okay now in a 0.5 gallon tank, but I feel that he will live longer and be healthier in a large tank. Any suggestions?
This all sounds great and reasonable. But, the only thing I will not get in live plants due to the fact that they can be high matinence and that I will have to drain the tank to take it with me during the summer, while my betta stays in a bowl for that drive. I am certain after 14 hours in a car with aquarium drained, the plants would be dead.

Here is what you need to know for your Betta to live a long and happy life:
1. A 5-gallon cycled (http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php )
tank is minimal for Betta health. Smaller tanks and bowls do not maintain a consistent temperature, and it's nearly impossible to keep healthy water conditions.
2. A filter is necessary in any tank in order to keep the water aerated and free of toxins. For Bettas it is best to set the filter flow to low, as they are not very strong swimmers.
3. A heater is essential. Bettas need warm steady temperatures of about 80F, to thrive. Constant fluctuation leads to stress, which inevitably leads to disease and often death. You can find an inexpensive heater for a small tank at any fish store.
4. In a 5-gallon tank, weekly 25% water changes, using a gravel siphon are necessary. Water conditioner must be added to the water before it is put in the tank to remove toxic chlorine, chloramine, metals, etc.
Bettas have been known to live for 10 years. I have personally known them to live for 6.
Good for you for getting your Betta a proper home!

A Betta will do quite well in a 2.5 gallon (or larger) tank with a heater and gentle filtration. I use silk plants in my Betta tanks, I don't want the hassle of maintaining live plants. Plastic plants can scratch them, but silk is just as good as real. If you haven't gotten a book on Bettas yet, I strongly recommend it. You can never have too much information on the pets you are responsible for. It's a small investment for so much information!

I will do better in a tank, 5 to 10 gallons. 5 gallons they're happy. 10 they're thriving.
You need a 5-10 gallon heater (depending what gal you get)
You need a 5-10gal filter
Live plants (fake are rough for them)
freeze dried shrimp or blood worms (bettas do not always enjoy the pebble things)

* 2.5 or 5 gallon tank with hood
* Filter (preferably sponge filter or a small, quiet filter)
* Mini-heater for 2-5 gallon tanks (keep it at a steady 75-85 F)
* Live or silk plants, smooth gravel or pebbles, caves..etc. to give him somewhere to hide and make the tank look nicer
* You can also get some frozen/freeze dried blood worms or brine shrimp as occasional treats and add variety to their diet.
Make sure you CYCLE the tank first.

good job for getting a new tank! most people don't care enough to do that!
ok well a 2-5 gallon tank should be plenty with lots of live plants, gravel, a filter, a light and hood, decorations, heater, gravel vacuum, etc. with all the equipment used, it should cost below $40 (used equipment is cheap and just as good as new)

Hello!
You betta will be wuite happy and content in a 2.5 gallon tank with a controlled under gravel filter (they do not prefer swift currents). They love live plants, like java moss :) Also, in a 2.5 gallon tank you can also have a tankmate such as an african dwarf frog. For more FACTUAL information on Bettas, please visit my site below.

I would only keep a Betta in a min 15g tank but USA and Canada seem to widely advertise these fish for sale in tiny vases and novelty boxes... sickening.
