Off cigarettes for a week now - how long..........?
I read Alan Carr's how to quit the easy way and have been off the cigarettes for exactly a week now. My determination is still at it's peak, but the cravings for cigarettes do not seem to be getting any better, in fact, it seems to be getting worse. It is not because I WANT a ciggi, quite the opposite in fact, I really feel I will never go back to them again, but I am struggling with the cravings that just won't, no matter what I do, or what I think of, go away(you are supposed to think 'Yes, I am free' when you get a craving, which I do and I really feel, but it doesn't stop my body cravings). I am just wondering how long it takes before the really bad cravings disappear? I know that perhaps I will always get 'pangs' for a ciggi (I smoked for 33 years) but it is the cravings that are taking over my thoughts that I want to stop and was kind of hoping that anyone out there who has given up could advise me on roughly how long they last. Any help much appreciated.

The first week is the worse, the 2nd week you will still have the odd day of craving but after a few months you only get the odd day of craving and over the years you get an occasional longing for a ciggies but like me after 16 years because of stress you start smoking again! Congratulations, it doesn't matter how long it takes, you have managed to last for a week, which would have been the worse week of your life, it doesn't matter how long it takes just keep going and eventually the cravings will stop - after a month or so I think the cravings are all in the mind.

What works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. I've quit 2 times already and was overwhelmed by the craving--I'm currently getting ready for round 3. This time I have a plan which I hope will work: 1. I am buying me exercise equipment so that I can exercise for 1 hour while I watch the news in the evenings. I find that time is the most dangerous time. I sit there, watch tv and smoke. I also started out with this plan by switching from regular cigs to non-additive added cigs--not that I know yet if it helps, I'll find out soon enough. I also made me a diet plan(I am very disciplined when it comes to diet and exercise). The main reason for me was always the weight gain--I gained weight and I couldn't stand myself. I'm still not willing to accept a weight gain--1 hour on an elliptical will burn lots of calories and so i am hoping.
I found out that it's really not so bad with the cravings for me. I frequently fly to Europe and with these no smoking policies in place at virtuall6y every airport in the U.S. does one not have tha ability to smoke and to my amazement did that not really bother me very much--so if I can go 15 hours without a cigarette then I should be able to quit.
Whgat I would like to suggest is that you pick up a sort of meditation where you ask your higher power to relieve you from the craving each time it hits. The longer you stay clear of cigs, the less the cravings will come. The craving itself usually does not last longer than five minutes. Make yourself a plan for overcoming those cravings by developing a habit that helps--prayer, meditation--whatever. Or work a step program almost like AA--tell yourself that you are powerless over cigarettes and turn that over to your higher power. I've met plenty of people who told me that this is how they did it and that it worked.....or, start a support group of your own where each time the craving hits you can call--and vice versa. The point is that starting a support network leaves you in company as opposed to now where you are on your own......good luck

They spread out- the 1st three weeks is the worst. Im a year out and I still get them when I have a drink or when I get stressed. I have had a couple sneaks and it tasted like ****.
The best thing to do is change up your routine - I.e if yoyu used to have one on the way to work, stop and do sometghing else- go get a coffee instead or just shake up your daily routine so you are not thinking about it as much. Joining a gy helped as I saw all these healthy people and it kept me on track. Its so hard but so worth it- this time in another few weeks you will feel great!! For now get some hard core exercise or distractions going...

As an ex smoker, I can say that you will get these cravings for a long time yet. For eg: My employers both smoke, but most of the time it doesn't bother me. Every now and then I almost say - give me one of those, but I don't, and within a minute I have forgotten all about it. It stinks in the office at times and I can smell the smoke of their clothing, so you're not missing out on anything. Keep up the good work. Will power will prevail.

I think it differs from Each Person, If your Determined to Stop you Will and one Week off them is a great, As you Progress the Smell of Cigarettes will Disgust you , So you are on the right Road and I hope you make it for your Health and Finance Sake, Try Chewing some gum , In my Case i Chomped on Grapes. Good Luck

I have no idea how long it is until the cravings go away, sorry. But I would suggest chewing gum or sucking on sunflower seeds. It might help the cravings go away.
