WW2 book recommendations?
I'm currently reading Winston Churchill's extensive 4-volume memoir of World War 2 ("The Second World War") and am wondering how this work is generally viewed in comparison to the rest of the WW2 literature? For example, is it regarded as particularly accurate? Does it seem overly biased? That kind of thing.
Also, can anyone recommend any other books that are widely regarded as definitive works on this topic. I'm looking for works that are generally accepted as being the best in the field, not just personal favourites, please.
Thank you!

Keegan and Ericsson are top-notch.
The 15 volume series by Morisson (History of US Naval Ops in WW2) is a great read, and provides a great deal of insght into the Japanese political situation (Vol 3).
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is probably the definitive work on the political situation in Germany.
As an aside, I would agree that reading some material from the "other side" is a great idea- Speer's book, Inside the Third Reich, and Iron Coffins, the Luftwaffe War Diaries were good reads for me. I have heard that Adolph Gallands book is very good, but have not read it yet.

There are hundreds of books that I could give to you, but I think you need to understand something first. There is an old saying that those who win the war get to write the history of it. So to just read Churchill, or just read accounts of the war by the Allies wouldn't give you a full understanding of World War II, for instance. A better choice would be to read a history book of Germany during the time right before the war, or read a history book of Japan to see what was happening before the war. In that way, you would see what went on in the minds of all parties involved in the conflict, giving you a well-rounded scenario as to why the war was fought in the first place. One place to start would be to read the book IWO by Richard Wheeler. This book is about the invasion of Iwo Jima. The book is divided into 3 parts: what went on at the American end in preparation for the invasion, what went on with the Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima as they prepared for the invasion, and then the invasion itself from both sides. Enjoy Churchill, but see what the Germans, Italians and Japanese were doing at the same time. Good luck. You've chosen a big challenge.

before everything, why is it that as quickly as people ask questions approximately international conflict II whey get replies telling them with regard to the Holocaust? The Holocaust became something the Nazis have been doing jointly as WW2 became on, it became not greater WW2 than the slave commerce became the yankee Civil conflict. Get Basil Liddell-Hart's 'the 2d international conflict' as your difficulty-free text textile- that's outstanding. a similar author's 'the different area of the Hill' is in step with interviews with German Generals performed today after the conflict. Books via Corneulis Ryan and Martin Middlebrook and Max Hastings are all outstanding money owed of person battles. For the jap front, which became incredibly the place the conflict became fought, John Erikson's 'highway to Stalingrad' and 'highway to Berlin' are definitve and intensely precise- perchance too plenty so. Alan Clarke's 'Barbarossa' is greater readable, although incorrect. something via David Glantz or Steve Zaloga is powerful textile for Russia. Books via Ian Hogg are the tops for the weapons and approaches- he's relaxing jointly as additionally being forensic in his factor and data. For an much less complicated study without dropping high quality, the Osprey publishing 'campaign' series approximately person battles can't be overwhelmed- they are o.k. written, heavy on maps and correct illustrations, and grant an outstanding foundation for greater precise analyzing. maximum libraries have a minimum of a few in this series. a similar writer's 'adult males at arms' and 'Elite' series are approximately person instruments etc, and those are additionally readable and via no skill 'dumbed down'. you have seen some outstanding WW2 video clips- there are super videos and a few authentic szhit ones. 'halfway', 'Tora Tora Tora' and 'A Bridge Too a ways', and 'conflict of england' are classics from the 60s made with enormous budgets and massive interest to factor. 'skinny crimson Line' is likewise very sturdy. in short, with Liddell Hart and a few Osprey titles you're able to be able to make an relatively sturdy initiate.

For the Eastern Front John Ericsson's two volumes, The Road to Stalingrad and The Road to Berlin are superb, very well researched and very accurate. Antony Beevor's Stalingrad and Berlin are both very good - less academic than Ericsson's, but very well written and easy to read.
For the Western Front, Armageddon: The Battle for Germany 1944-45 by Max Hastings is a good read.

Churchills will be biased as he was on one side of the war, so he would think he was right and Hitler was wrong but Im sure Hitler had his own views which if written in a book would be biased, the best thing to do would be is to read personal accounts for most parties affected by the war e.g. british, americans germans french and religions sections e.g. jews books such as band of brothers by steven ambrose i think, anne franks diary they will give you a much broader view and less bias and you will be able then to come to your own views on the subject. If your after evidence based then you need to read academic journals that state fact and come to conclusions... hope this helps and if you cant be arsed to read the books try and watch band of brothers its amazing although bias as it portrays americans as being saviors of the war like most WW2 films

Churchill's work is generally regarded as first rate by most historians. Of course it's somewhat biased, but the details are all accurate.
The best general work I know of is "The Second World War" by John Keegan, who is one of the foremost military historians of his generation. Keegan, in turn, includes his own list of the fifty best books on World War II, in his professional opinion. I would refer you to that list.
Cheers
