Fishing for brown trout?

There is a stream near where I live and would like to fish for brown trout if this is possible. It's quite a small stream about eight to ten feet wide and one or two feet deep. Will there be trout big enough to eat? Also what is the law regarding this. I'm not interested in fly fishing it would be worming like I did as a boy I would like to do.

if you have caught them there in the past, there should be some still. look for some deeper pools...should be some somewhere along it and just drift your worm through them using little or no weight.

as long as it's public or you have permission, all you need is a fishing license which you need for anywhere, anyway.

I have taken NICE trout from a number of streams in the Western USA that you could almost jump across without getting wet feet. Four to six feet across or so. It can be a great surprise to see how little water can make big fish. I would fish your stretch by using 1/2 or 1/3 of a nightcrawler slipped on the hook of a jig and tied to hang horizontal on the line rather than vertical which appears unnatural to the feeding fish. Then suspend the offering below a clear "Cast-A-Bubble" float just low enough to clear the bottom of the stream. Cast upstream and allow the bait to float over all the likely looking spots and be ready. The strikes can come quick and hard. When you see that float going anywhere but where the water would normally take it, set the hook. You are into fish. Good luck and good fishing. (By the way, Brown Trout tend to feed more in the lower light times of the day, so look for them next to the bank and in the very early morning or into the evening hours.)

Assuming the stream you mentioned is moving fast, typical of trout streams, there will be eddy's behind rocks all along the curved sections of the stream. Those areas will usually hold feeding trout, usually only one, untill another larger more dominant trout takes the feeding spot over. I find great results by casting a bronze nr. 1 Mepps spinner ( or smaller), with a spider web brand six pound mono line and light tackle. Browns are a more agressive feeders then 'bows' or 'cuts' and will slam a well presented lure.....but they are pretty 'spooky' during the day, close to shore, so be quiet, use felt bottom wading 'shoes' or boots and work up stream, 'scouting' carefully as you go, BEFORE you move up....and dont take more then your 'share' of fish....tks. it is possible, but it may be rainbow trout, remember these fish are very bony so be careful when you eat them. if the area is only 8 to 10 feet wide, the fish may be biggest at about 11 inches

regardless of what type of fishing you want to do you must hold a fishing licence from the environment agency which you can buy at the post office.

secondly you need to find out who owns the rights to fish that stretch of water, and buy a licence from them.

failure to do both can land you in a lot of trouble and £1000's of pounds in fines if caught. its really not worth it for a fish worth a few pounds.

as for the size of the fish you are allowed to take out, again its the environment agency you need to contact about this but anything over 8" will be big enough to eat.
