Breastfeeding and contact lenses?

I have been wearing contact lenses for over 25 years, and never had trouble until after my son was born. I now have to wear my glasses all the time. If I try to wear my contact lenses, I feel like there is something in my eye, my eyes get very red, until I just can't stand having them on. I still breastfeed my 11-month-old son and I wonder if it may be causing these problems. Has anybody had this problem during breastfeeding?

PS: My skin was very dry during the first few months of breastfeeding, but it's much better now. I drink plenty of water/liquids everyday

    Hi !

I think hormones from breast-feeding/ pregnancy can affect all secretions (ie vaginal, eyes etc) and diminish them. So maybe your eyes aren't lubricated enough. Being pregnant can actually change your prescription, but I think that is supposed to return to normal after birth. Check in with your eye care professionnal for an exam and maybe try another brand...

I've heard it's pregnancy that can cause issues with your eyes. I know I had an appointment while pregnant and had one prescription, then when my son was about 7 months old I had another appointment and it was completely different. The strength may be off. Have you had an eye exam since?

You may also want to try a different brand. I think Acuvue Oasis is supposed to work really well with dry eyes. In any case I'd make an appointment and talk about this issue with the doctor.

what kind of contact lens solution do you use? That happened to me (not because of breast feeding but my eyes were drying out and my eye doctor had me switch to this different kind and I've never had a problem since. The kind I use is called UltraCare, it comes in a black box. You fill the little cup with solution then add a tablet to it and put your contacts in the case that fits in the cap. The solution is Hydrogen Peroxide so it really disinfects the contacts well and then the tablet neutralizes it by morning so they are safe to use.

You may want to ask your eye doctor about switching to that.
