Get used to understanding what ships use for different powerplant configurations i.e COGOG, COGAG, CODLAG etc.

Read up on gearbox construction - dual and single helical gearing, primary and secondary reductions, torque balancing and splitting, basically how to make the gearbox as small as possible and still carry the required load.

Learn about Synchronising Self Shifting (SSS) clutches and fluid couplings, drive shafts for both fixed and controllable pitch propellers and the hydraulic systems that control the latter.

Look up the Michell type Thrust blocks and Plummer bearings, Cranes stern seals and 'A' and 'P' brackets.

General hydraulic systems with electrical control is advised.
