Empty Nesters--what do you do for social activity?
I am long divorced and have supported and raised my daughter since she was 8 (father is in her life, also). She turned out great and will be going to college in the fall. I foresee the rest of my life as it is now, working, and deepening very further into solitude, which I don't mind. However, I'm told that's not a good way to be. What do people my age (50) not quite seniors, still in the work force, do for a social life? I don't like activities meant for families such as church because I feel worse being alone in situations where I am out of place more than being by myself. Don't suggest charity work, that's not a social life. There really aren't many activities for single fifty-somethings. What do people do?.
I enjoy history and learning and other odd things that most people don't care about and because I've worked all my life, I have little in common with other women my age who've been stay-at-homes. Suggestions?

Well, a romantic tryst would certainly liven things up.
You should feel no loyalty to or guilt about your ex in this regard. And, your daughter will be supportive, I bet.

i really can't say, i'm a home body now but i do like to camp still in the summer. i don't get much done but work and find that the older i get the less i want to be involved in. i do still miss my kids they have moved from home but i still enjoy hiking and camping, eagle watching, sitting by the river to count boats and trains go by. (some things and habits you just can't seem to let go of so easy.)
i tried charity work for awhile and did enjoy it but i really don't consider that an activity. it was rewarding for awhile though and i did meet some really great people during that time.
i could suggest that you check with your local library to see what activities they have, ours does so much for all ages and it is more than read a book clubs.
what ever you decide to do do something that you like because if you don't truly enjoy it it is not worth the hassle of doing it.
