how can i prevent the lights from bursting so much?

    just do a little burning in photoshop

    take 5 shots with different exposures -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, and then merge them together to create whats called a "HDR image" using a program called "photomatix" (google it)

    if you cant do that just use a very bright flash, but that dosent always work.
