I'm a bit over the 'sportsmen are role models" line that's trotted out every time one of them does something stupid.
For the most part, they are very young, very spoilt, males whose only real contribution to life so far is the fact that they have spent their entire life getting good at one thing.
I can't see millions of kids hitting the bong because Phelps did. Give the guy a break. If that's the worst thing he does, he's still pretty much a good kid.
And if marijuana is performance enhancing, then I'm getting a bong tommorrow to prepare for the 2012 Olympics!
He didn't cheat against anyone, unlike Marion Jones. He just partook in a substance that half the living world has tried - it's got nothing to do with peer pressure, it's experimenting (however ill advised) and all young people do that.

Finally the question of reason appears!! The only thing Phelps did was get caught (some jerk off sold him down the river for a few bucks)....I agree cut the kid a break...I am willing to be that if Phelps has the same success in 2012 in London this will be forgotten really quick...PEOPLE THERE ARE MORE PRESSING ISSUES THEN MICHEAL PHELPS

It's not performance enhancing. It's stupid. He must have low self esteem. Why else would he give in to peer pressure? He shouldn't be given a break. He needs to suffer all the consequences anyone else smoking pot would have to. The only difference is he has more to lose than most people.

it was a personal choice, and like you said, he is still a young adult!
also, i admire is accomplishments that he has made already & i still think he is the greatest swimmer that ever lived!
