Laptop screen to Hp monitor?

I have a Vaio VGN series and the screen is shattered from the inside. I'm trying to connect it to a HP desktop monitor. I did and the screen showed up. But I right clicked and try to format the screen to make it fit but I ended up sending it back to the notebook screen. How do I send it back to the Monitor? :/ I've unscrewed both ends put them both back in, restarted my laptop and the only thing that happens is that my HP screen blinks on then off showing its got a connection. What now?

Check the manual for your computer.  There is a series of keystrokes that you need to enter to switch to the external monitor.  It will be listed in your manual which you should be able to download from the Sony website.
