Richard Ameryk, a Welshman and wealthy Bristol merchant.
Amerk was the chief investor in the 2nd transatlantic voyage of John Cabot, whose voyages in 1497 and 1498 laid the groundwork for the British claim to Canada.
On his little ship Matthew, Cabot reached Labrador in May 1947 and became the first recorded European to set foot on American soil, predating Vespucci by two years.
ALthough the original manuscript of the Bristol calendar for that year (which reads: "...on Ste. John the Baptist's day, (June 24), the land of Ameirica was found by the merchants of Bristowe..." does not survivie there are a number of references to it in other contemporary documents.
The earliest surviving map to use the name was made by Martin Waldseemuller in 1507 but it only applied to South America. Waldseemuller made the assumption that the name was derived from a Latin version of Amerigo Vespucci's first name because he had mapped the S.A. coast from 1500 - 1502. (Verspucci never reached North America) nor did he ever use the name of America for his discovery.
New countries or continents were never named after a persons' first name, but always after the second as in Tasmania, Van Diemen's Land , or the Cook Islands)
America would have become Vespucci Land or Vespuccia if the Italian explorer had conscioulsy given his name to it.

Columbus and Vespucci landed in Nicaragua, in a area wealthy in gold talked about as Amerrique. later on Vespucci replaced is call from Alberigo to Amerigho. actually, the naming of united states originated from natives, not from Europeans.
