What does the second verse of "Jingle Bells" mean?

The second verse of the song "Jingle Bells" is:

Get a bob-tailed bay,

Two-forty for his speed.

Then hitch him to an open sleigh

And you will take the lead.

What is a bob-tailed bay, what is two -forty (for whom?), and what does all of this mean?

Got a bob-tailed bay (a bay horse with a bobbed or docked tail)

Two-forty for his fee (the horse is hired)

Hitched him to an open sleigh

And we soon had the lead.

The problem is these are not actual lyrics from Jingle Bells by James Pierpoint. I thought they were, too, but they aren't. The actual lyrics are here. http://www.lyricsmania.com/jinglebellslyrics.html

This verse is really the last verse.

Just get a bob tailed bay --- type of horse

Two forty as [for] his speed --- talking about how much faster the horses are

[and] Hitch him to an open sleigh --- hook them to the sleigh

And crack! you'll take the lead. --- and the crack is

them taking off at full speed.
