It would be a good idea to start with a framework of what you can remember, then just fill in the gaps. If you join Ancestry.co.uk they are putting more and more telephone directories online which you could search. Libraries hold voters lists which could help if you know the area you're looking for.

If your family are British then you would need to go to the archives library to search the *Electoral Registers*. This is an address based search not a name search, anyone over the age of 18 will be listed in the registered. Any address needed from 2001 to today's date will be in the local library.

If you can find your family in the US Census 1850 thru 1930 it will give you their address at that time if you look at the far left of the page. The first column will indicate the street and the second column will indicate the house number.

Also look in the old City Directories and they will have your family's address.

If you live in the UK then you can visit your local library, or the towns, in which you lived in library. They hold an archive of all the old Kelly's and Thompsons directories. The Kelly's Directories used to have peoples names, and their addresses listed.

If you know the cities, old records of real estate ownership or old city directories might be in the city's archives. There are detectives who specialize inn this sort of thing, but it would be kind of fun to go yourself. If you can establish residence through high school records or yearbooks, it's gold.
